VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center

In 1957,a young man's life was saved when the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) performed the first kidney transplant in Virginia.

Five years later, Dr. David Hume established the nation’s first Clinical Transplant Center, now known as the VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center.

Sixty years after that first transplant, the VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center continues to be a pioneer in the art and science of organ transplantation – leading the way in not only clinical care, but also education and research.

If you or a loved one is suffering from advanced liver or kidney disease, Hume-Lee Transplant Center offers hope.

We’ve revolutionized care and
transformed lives with:

  • Over 4,900 organ transplants performed
  • Advanced therapies for complex cases
  • Exceptional patient outcomes
  • Shorter waiting times
  • Greater accessibility to patients throughout Virginia and beyond
